In-Pit Disposal of Mine Tailings for a Sustainable Mine Closure: A Responsible Alternative to Develop Long-Term Green Mining Solutions

In the next decades many of old tailings storage facilities (TSFs) could be re-processed if one considers prices metals, new uses metals which today are not valuable, and application new, more efficient metallurgical technologies. this context, in-pit disposal mine (IPDMT) is an attractive alternative to used as part responsible closure: mines reprocess place them in open pit sustainable closure. This article explores a little-explored technique that has potential considered environmentally friendly solution, returning their origin providing long-term stability under climate change scenario. presents main features, benefits, drawbacks IPDMT, with emphasis on: (i) description advantages disadvantages application; design issues related (ii) IPDMT physical (pit slope stability, transport, placement systems); (iii) hydrological (water management, seepage control, hydrogeological monitoring,); (iv) geochemical (geochemical characterization, acid rock drainage covers).
